Tony Pick

Special Counsel

Tony has broad experience as a workplace relations lawyer, having worked in private practice, for the AiGroup, at the Fair Work Commission, as an HR advisor on secondment, and most recently as a lecturer at two universities. His clientele come from many industries, including in particular disability services and the not-for-profit sector. They find him accessible, responsive and collaborative. His aim is to provide legal advice and support that is consistently sensible, sensitive and smart.

Areas of Practice

Tony advises on both litigious and non-litigious matters with a particular emphasis on FWC, VCAT and FCFCOA litigation. This includes the full gamut from award compliance and underpayments to general protections and unfair dismissal claims, bargaining disputes and enterprise agreement approval to workplace investigations and cultural reviews.

Due to his broad knowledge base and teaching experience, Tony is a sought-out trainer on various topics such as code of conduct investigations, appropriate workplace behaviour, WHS and the NDIS safeguarding framework. Tony regularly presents at external conferences and CPD events – including for the Leo Cussen Institute and the Law Institute of Victoria.

Experience and expertise

Tony has broad experience as evidenced by his:

  • work as an Associate to Commissioner Barbara Deegan at the Fair Work Commission;
  • involvement in a number of high-profile bargaining disputes on behalf of the Victorian government and APS agencies;
  • representation of clients in conciliation and arbitration proceedings at the Fair Work Commission and VCAT;
  • conduct of numerous workplace investigations within different statutory frameworks and organisational policies; and
  • direct involvement in award modernisation proceedings and ongoing advice to employers on award compliance issues.

Professional and community engagement

Tony is a highly recommended training provider, who is known for his use of hypothetical problem questions to engage participants and reinforce key messages. He currently teaches employment law and civil procedure at Victoria University and Deakin University. In addition, Tony is engaged in the legal and broader community through his involvement in the National Tertiary Education Union, the Industrial Relations Society of Victoria and the Australian Lawyers Cricket Council.
